For the last year we have been telling Sam that when starts school he will get to play on a real soccer team with real games! Well little did we know that they moved the age you could start soccer from 5 to 6! So when Chris called to ask about sign ups we were all bummed that he had one more year to wait. And what does the coolest Dad in the world do about it! How about starting his very own kids league for 4 and 5 year olds! We were hoping for 20-30 kids and ended up with 80!!! It turned out to be an awesome fundraiser for his Varsity soccer team (each of the 8 teams are coached by two varsity players) The coaches and the players have matching shirts and its just the cutest thing ever! The high school kids get to chalk up some volunteer hours and the little kids have the time of their lives...it's a win/win for everyone! Here is the funniest part...Chris, of course, signed up to be Sam and Charley's coach (we let Charley play at 3 and half because we're pretty tight with the director :) ) On the first day he realized he spent much of his time going around to the 4 mini-feilds making sure everything was running as planned so guess who had to fill in as coach...you guessed it...Coach Emily! And no I know nothing about soccer but my degree in early childhood education serves me way better with 4 and 5 year olds then anything soccer related! HA! We let the kids name themselves and they are officially the Bullsharks! Their team color is light blue in honor of Daddy's first soccer team!
Sam of course LOVES it! He is as close to being "in his element" as anything I have ever seen! Last Sat. they played two games and he scored 13 goals...and we only let him play the second half of every game! (He "helps coach" the first half) Both games the Bullsharks were down 3-0 at halftime then we put Sam in and we won 7-3 and 6-3 with Sam scoring literally every goal! In his defense he tries to pass it but in his words, "Mom no one else is there so I just put it in"! He makes me laugh! He always wants to know, "what color are we playing today, Dad?" and even though we don't keep score he knows the score to every game and how many goals he scored...remind you of anyone??
One of my funniest moments as a Mom happened with Sam's most impressive defensive move ever...One of the kids on the other team got a break away and kicked the ball far out from the goal. It was just about to trickle in for a goal when Sam comes out of no where, all the way from the other goal, tracks the ball down, yells out, "Not going to happen" and clears the ball away from the goal! I was laughing so hard I was crying...It was like slow-motion as he yells out for everyone to hear....Rambo style, "not going to happen", then boom...clears the ball! He clearly loves every second!
And Sissy...ohhh sissy...she is having fun and that's the main thing! We are really proud of her for hanging in there with the big kids but there is some playing in the goal and sitting on her ball involved! The difference between a 3 and a half year old and a 5 and a half year old is pretty significant so she has trouble keeping up with the pace during the actual games. She does awesome in the drills always trying her best and we are really proud of her for sticking with her team as they "rotate" around to all the different stations...practice days are more her speed! :) She does awesome as the only 3 year old mixed in with 80, 4 and 5 year olds!
Chris does as awesome job with the PKL (Patriot Kids League...Sam got to name it) and I'm a proud wife when he gets such great feedback from the community! Every Sat. a new person comes up and introduces themselves and thanks him for putting the league together! Several of the moms comment on how organized he is and how it's great to see teenagers "giving back" as the coaches! I promise I'm going to take more action shots this Sat. but you know it's hard work coaching the Bull Sharks to all those victories! Here is a pre-game shot...I'll try to get another one with all of our matching shirts on!
